Visit Trengo →Front's core insight — that customer conversations shouldn't live in one person's inbox — was genuinely novel when it launched and the execution is still strong. Multi-channel shared inboxes, routing rules, SLA alerts, and the ability to comment on messages without the customer seeing them are features that improve team coordination on high-volume communication workflows. The CRM-lite layer and analytics on top make it a plausible alternative to a full helpdesk for some teams.
The value proposition strains at the edges. For teams primarily doing customer support, the cross-team routing that makes Front powerful is overhead they never use. For email-light teams, Front's pricing feels high for a glorified shared inbox. The mobile app has historically lagged desktop. And unlike Hiver (which lives in Gmail) or Missive (which is multi-provider and fast), Front requires adopting a new interface that not all team members embrace fully. Teams where only 20% of messages actually need the routing logic often realize they're paying for infrastructure that a simpler tool would have handled.
Front supports full data export from Settings → Company → Export Data: messages, tags, contacts, and teammates. Conversations export in EML format and can be imported into most email clients; structured data (contacts, tags, conversation metadata) exports as CSV. The Front API also allows custom exports for teams with large conversation histories.
The migration asset that requires the most planning is your rule set. Front's routing rules (sender domain → assign to team A, subject line contains "invoice" → tag Finance) don't transfer — you'll rebuild them in the new tool's automation language. Export a list of all active rules before canceling, and use the migration as a chance to audit which rules are actually firing versus which accumulated and went stale. Most teams find that 30–40% of their routing rules are redundant on review.
For teams moving from Front to Hiver specifically, Google Workspace users keep their existing Gmail labels and filters — only the shared inbox layer changes. The transition typically takes a single day and requires no migration of historical data since Hiver reads from your existing Gmail account.
The sharpest decision in replacing Front is matching tool size to actual team size and workflow complexity. A two-person team sharing a support inbox needs Missive or Help Scout, not an enterprise routing platform. A 30-person support org handling multi-channel at SLA needs Freshdesk or Zoho Desk. Front's niche — teams of 5–50 with cross-functional handoffs — is where it earns its price. If you're outside that band in either direction, the alternatives above will feel like a better fit from the first week.
